How to help your swimmer establish goals...

As parents, you may help your swimmer fill out a goal sheet for their coach, or help to establish some personal goals for their season. Naturally, the majority of swimming goals are geared towards going specific times.

Equally as important are to establish some non-time based goals, which is easy to overlook. Examples of non-time based goals, could be:

*making 4 out of 5 practices a week

*learning to do a back to breast crossover turn

*doing 2-arm butterfly and no drill during fly swim sets

These types of goals will ultimately help your swimmer to achieve their time based goals, but also provides them the opportunity to work on their self discipline and stay motivated throughout practices.

When establishing season goals, they could also include non swimming goals that can benefit your swimmer during their swim season. Such as:

*getting all homework done before practice

*preparing projects in advance to free up weekends (for swim meets)

*getting to bed on school nights by a specific time

I know as swimmers and swim supporters we are obsessed with times, but your swimmer probably already puts enough stress and focus on their times, that allowing them to have goals that are not time based can help with remembering that there are other aspects to consider in being successful.
