Masters Pan Ams

This past week I competed in Masters Pan American Games in Cleveland, OH. I crammed 5 events in 2 days, swimming the 100 breast, 50 fly and 200 IM on the first day and then the 400 free and 200 breast the second day. I came home with 2 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronze within my age group. So, I am an international super star, once again. :)

I went "best" times (as a masters swimmer) in the 50 fly and 400 free. I was pretty disappointed in both my 200 breast and 200 IM, but as we all know- we have to take the good with the bad.

After having an amazing spring meet at YMCA nationals, I was expecting best times to come easier. But, I admit, when I saw my times being seconds off it was hard to not feel defeated. This is where the mindset training, which I teach, needed to be applied to my own races. Of course it is okay to be disappointed when you swim poorly but you can not internalize it into think you are a failure at everything you do. Learning from the race, maybe it is something you need to work on with your coach, maybe it is getting out of your own comfort zone (During the race? During practice?)

This summer, I have done a couple practices with the club team that trains at my pool. I noticed how different their workouts are from the ones I do on my own. I have asked one of the coaches to help with some ideas of sets for when I gear up for my next meet. I may even try and splash with them once a week to make sure I am getting the speed work in which I do not like to do. Plus there is always the motivation of having kids almost a third of your age kicking my booty in the pool.

All of this to say. I went, I swam, I conquered? (yes, the question mark is deliberate), but there is an additional one I did not and will not give up.
